About Me

Joy Rogers

Clinical Psychologist (NZ Reg)

I returned to Christchurch in 2020 following 25 years of living and working in Central Otago. I have always worked in both private and public settings since graduating from Canterbury University in 1992. I really enjoy the variety of people and presentations this brings. I like to take a compassionate, collaborative approach in my work with clients, who may come with complex anxiety, depression, eating disorders, complex trauma, emotional dysregulation, identity/ existential issues, neurodiversity (mostly ASD and ADHD) adjustment difficulties, or grief.

When I’m not at the office, you’ll find me out walking my dogs on the Christchurch trails and beaches we’ve found, reading, singing, or indulging in something creative. I also enjoy spending time with friends and with my two adult daughters.

I use a variety of frameworks configured to suit the individual. These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, mindfulness and meditation, EMDR, trauma-informed approaches, and brain-based perspectives. In recent years, one of my dogs has joined me to offer non-judgemental, confidential support for neurodiverse clients. Staying open, curious, and a life-long commitment to learning, are strongly held values of mine, along with old-fashioned kindness.

What to Expect

If you are interested in working with me I will organise a time to phone you and ask for further details about what you’re struggling with. This is an opportunity for us both to see if we are likely to be a good fit to work together and for you to ask any questions before we have our first session. Sessions are an hour long, and during the first session I will get you to read and sign a general consent form. Then we will talk and I will gather background information about you, as well as ask further questions about your current struggles. At the end of that hour, I will provide an initial summary and ask for your feedback and we will discuss a plan moving forward. Information on the ASD assessment process can be found under
‘Autism Assessment’ in the menu.

MY Space

My office is located on a quiet street in New Brighton.

My space is a comfortable and peaceful environment with a relaxed atmosphere that I really enjoy working in. I keep it a low sensory environment, including natural light only. Filtered water is always available, along with things to draw with and fidget with. There is on-street parking available and secure bike parking in the courtyard outside.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any specific sensory needs and I will do my best to cater to these within my space.
